Race and Education Film Club 2025

Building on our 2024 season, the Race and Education Film Club is back for 2025.

In keeping with our anti-racist commitments and foundation, the Race and Education Film Club sought to explore: how the medium of film can act as catalysts for dialogue between practitioners and academics around the core themes of race and racism in education.

In our attempts to provide a deeper exploration of the intersections of the GM (Global Majority), this season’s documentary sought to explore the intersections of race and racism in relation to sexism, misogyny and patriarchy. As such, this year’s theme is, ‘Anti-racism and Gender’.

The Film Club session for this season was the American based documentary “Deconstructing Karen” (2022). The documentary consisted of GM Anti-Racist activists Regina Jackson and Saira Rao, hosting a dinner party in which they invite white women across the political spectrum, for a dinner party entitled, ‘Race2Dinner’. The dinner party sought to explore the explicit role that white women play in their complicity and upholding of white supremacy.

The session’s proceedings followed the usual format: watch the documentary in advance, then join us on Zoom for a one-hour discussion of the documentary. The discussion was chaired by co-founder of the Film Club, Saima Saleh, and the panellists included fellow founder of the Film Club Alexandra Brown and Rose Chantilke, PhD candidate and consultant.

As with previous years, the Race and Education Film club was fortunate enough to be able to provide an in person session of discussion of the documentary (following a carefully selected extract of the documentary), at the symposium at the Association of Moral Educators 51st Conference in Tampere, Finland.

Collaborators

Organisations we are collaborating with on this wider activity are:

We have received funding for our project through the generous support of a Small Grant from the Culham St Gabriel’s Trust.

Key aims of the project

  • Consider theoretical and practical complexities for teachers of issues of race, intersected with religion and culture and education
  • Showcase the contribution of Religion and Worldview Education (RWE) specialist teachers to critical reflection on race and education and by this means to promote an understanding of the subject’s distinctive curriculum contribution; developing leadership and research skills of 3 RWE practitioners by this means
  • Encourage RWE practitioners to appreciate contributions to their subject from other experts outside the subject community in non-defensive ways
  • Explore the potential of a new model of knowledge production and exchange built around discussion of a film using collaborative action research
