Sharing Space
Race and Education Film Club 2022
We ran a film club from April to August 2022 comprising 3 online and 1 hybrid (i.e. virtual and face to face combined) viewing discussions of films which facilitate an authentic dialogue and knowledge exchange about race and education between interested academics and teachers/practitioners.
We ran this in conjunction with a pre-conference workshop for the 50th Anniversary Conference of the Journal of Moral Education (JME) in Manchester July 2022.
Collaborators
Organisations we collaborated with on this wider activity are:
- The Race and Multiculturalism SIG of the Association of Moral Educators (AME)
- The Journal of Moral Education Trust
We received funding for our project through the generous support of a Small Grant from the Culham St Gabriel’s Trust.
Key aims of the project
- Consider theoretical and practical complexities for teachers of issues of race, intersected with religion and culture and education
- Showcase the contribution of Religion and Worldview Education (RWE) specialist teachers to critical reflection on race and education and by this means to promote an understanding of the subject’s distinctive curriculum contribution; developing leadership and research skills of 3 RWE practitioners by this means
- Encourage RWE practitioners to appreciate contributions to their subject from other experts outside the subject community in non-defensive ways
- Explore the potential of a new model of knowledge production and exchange built around discussion of a film using collaborative action research
Film programme
Each event comprised:
- a film, available to stream one week in advance;
- a follow-up Zoom discussion session lasting one hour, hosted by a specialist chair and commentator(s).

In keeping with the theme that was cemented during our last film club (African Apocalypse) the anti-racist film club wishes to centre the voices of not only the creator or curator of the sources we engage with, but also, the narratives and the and lived experiences of the folks who traditions they were born and cultivated within.
In a bid to honour the former, and to provide you with context that will aid your understanding of the religious or spiritual dimensions of the film Buladó, the anti-racist film club invites you to read the handout that provides a short summary of the underpinnings of African Philosophy, and an outline of the film, by Alexandra Brown:
